Hummingbird Jewelry Marvelous Spatuletail Pin/Pendant NEW! A sterling inlaid brooch/pendant of the Marvelous Spatuletail, an endangered species of Peru. To woo the female, this tiny hummer advertises his fitness as a male by frantically waving his two elongated tail feathers and flashing the blue discs at the end - his spatules. I’d be impressed! It features turquoise, chrysocolla, orange spiny oyster, mother of pearl, with wings of oyster and spatules of lapis. Height is 3 inches. It is designed by Cesar Palma, whose mission is to teach about and protect the fauna of his native Peru through his jewelry creations. Tere once designed for the internationally-known Franklin Mint and is now designing on her own, creating nature-inspired “Designs by Tere.” While her existing portfolio includes many themes—calla lilies, iris, dogwood, bamboo, bees, frogs, dolphins and dragonflies—this is her first venture into hummingbirds. She designed it exclusively for Beth at the Sedona Hummingbird Gallery. Critical feedback from the Hummingbird Society led ultimately to the design shown here. The Hummingbird Society will receive a royalty from all sales. As confirmation of the Society’s endorsement, a tiny version of the Society’s logo is cast in miniature on the back of the silver wing. This special offering, Flying Gem, is from an Arizona artisan: a beautiful hummingbird and flower designer necklace ($148) and matching earrings ($48), made from a tarnish-resistant alloy of silver and argentinium.
The creator of this hummingbird pin/pendant, Tere Petrovich of Pennsylvania, uses a lost wax technique, in which she first carves the little bird out of jeweler’s wax material which melts at high temperature thus creating a mold. The resulting cavity is filled with molten silver—and a hummingbird is born!
"Hummerlove" ($250, sterling) is from Designs by Tere (of Franklin Mint fame), made exclusively for my gallery. The earrings pictured here ($150) also come as a separate unit in a matching charm-like necklace ($85).
